What does a childcare centre cost in Australia?
Long day care fees in Australia commonly range from about $120 to $200 or more per day before subsidy, with inner-city centres at the top end. The Child Care Subsidy reduces out-of-pocket costs based on family income and activity, paid directly to the service, and an hourly rate cap applies. Family day care and outside school hours care are usually cheaper per session. Childcare is GST-free, so quoted fees are what you pay before subsidy.

How is childcare regulated in Australia?
Approved services operate under the National Quality Framework, overseen nationally by ACECQA and enforced by each state or territory regulator. Services are assessed against the National Quality Standard across seven areas, including educational program, safety, staffing and leadership, and receive a public rating. Educators must hold approved qualifications and a Working with Children Check.
What do the National Quality Standard ratings mean?
Services are rated Exceeding, Meeting, Working Towards, or in rare cases Significant Improvement Required, with an Excellent rating available by application. Working Towards is common and not automatically alarming, but ask what is being improved. Ratings can be several years old, so treat them as one signal alongside your own visit and current staff.
What are the educator-to-child ratios?
National minimums are one educator to four children under 24 months, one to five for ages two to three, and one to ten or eleven for preschool ages depending on the state. Some states set stricter numbers for particular ages. Ask each service how its rooms are staffed in practice, including during lunch breaks.
How does the Child Care Subsidy work?
The Child Care Subsidy is paid by the government directly to your approved provider, reducing the fees you are charged. Your percentage depends on family income, and the hours subsidised depend on recognised activity like work or study, with an hourly rate cap limiting what the subsidy applies to. Apply through your myGov Centrelink account before care starts.
How long are childcare waitlists?
It varies enormously by suburb, age group and the days you need. Places for babies and popular days like Tuesday to Thursday are the tightest, and inner-city and new-growth suburbs can have long waits, while other areas offer immediate places. Join several waitlists early, keep your details current, and ask services honestly how the list is moving.
