How to calculate GST on an Australian tax invoice

GST in Australia is a flat 10%. A valid ATO tax invoice shows the GST-exclusive subtotal, the 10% GST as its own line, and the GST-inclusive total. The formulas are:

  • GST amount = GST-exclusive subtotal × 0.10
  • GST-inclusive total = GST-exclusive subtotal + GST amount
  • Remove GST from an inclusive price: GST = price ÷ 11; GST-exclusive amount = price ÷ 1.1

Worked example

A plumber invoices a customer for $400 labour and $100 in materials, a $500 GST-exclusive subtotal. The GST line is $500 × 0.10 = $50, and the total payable is $500 + $50 = $550 including GST. The invoice must also show the words “Tax Invoice”, the business name and 11-digit ABN, the date of issue, and a brief description of each item, the seven elements the ATO requires on a valid tax invoice.

If you are not registered for GST (annual turnover under $75,000), you do not charge GST: the total is simply the sum of your line items, and your invoice shows prices as GST-free. There is a matching document in the free Australian invoice template pack for that case, headed “Invoice” rather than “Tax Invoice”, if you would rather edit a file than fill in a form.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about invoicing requirements in Australia.

What must be included on a tax invoice in Australia?
The ATO requires 7 elements on a valid tax invoice: (1) the words 'Tax Invoice' stated prominently, (2) the seller's identity (name or business name), (3) the seller's ABN, (4) the date of issue, (5) a brief description of the items or services sold, (6) the GST amount (if any) for each item, and (7) the total price including GST. For invoices over $1,000, you must also include the buyer's identity and ABN.
Do I need to charge GST on my invoices?
You must charge GST if your business is registered for GST. Registration is mandatory once your annual turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for not-for-profits). If you're below the threshold, GST registration is optional. If you're not registered, you cannot charge GST and your invoices should state prices as GST-free.
Is this invoice generator really free?
Yes, completely free with no hidden costs. You can create and download as many invoices as you need without signing up or providing payment details. The generator runs entirely in your browser, your data is never sent to our servers.
What's the difference between a tax invoice and a regular invoice?
A tax invoice is a specific document required under Australia's GST system. It includes your ABN, itemised GST amounts, and meets ATO formatting requirements. A regular invoice may not include these elements. If you're GST-registered, you must issue tax invoices for sales of $82.50 (including GST) or more when the buyer requests one.
Does this generator keep a copy of the invoices I create?
No. Everything you type stays in your browser and nothing is sent to our servers, so closing the tab loses the invoice unless you have downloaded the PDF. Download it, and keep it: the ATO requires invoice records to be kept for at least 5 years from the later of when the record was made or when the transaction was completed, and a PDF is an acceptable copy as long as it stays legible. If you would rather not manage that yourself, a OneBookPlus account stores every invoice you issue and every payment against it.
Can I use this generator if I'm not registered for GST?
Yes. Simply toggle off GST in the invoice form and your invoice will show prices as GST-free. You'll still include your ABN and all other required details. The generator works for all Australian business structures including sole traders, partnerships, companies, and trusts.
What payment terms should I include on my invoice?
Common payment terms in Australia include 7 days, 14 days, or 30 days from the invoice date. You should also include your preferred payment method, bank transfer (with BSB and account number), PayID, or a link to pay online. Clear payment terms help you get paid faster and reduce disputes.
My prices already include GST. What do I put in the line items?
Enter the GST-exclusive amount and leave GST switched on, and the generator adds the 10% line and the total for you. If your quoted prices already include GST, take that quoted figure and divide it by 1.1 first. A $550 all-inclusive price is a $500 line item, and the generator will show the $50 of GST beneath it so the invoice still totals $550. Typing $550 as the line item and leaving GST on would bill your customer $605. The GST calculator does the conversion if you have a list of prices to convert.
Does the invoice show GST on each line or once at the bottom?
Once at the bottom. Each line item shows its GST-exclusive amount, then the invoice shows a subtotal, a single 10% GST line and the total including GST. That satisfies the ATO, which asks for either the GST amount for the sale or a statement that the total price includes GST, not a GST figure beside every line. Mixed invoices, where some lines are taxable and others are GST-free, are the exception: those need the taxable extent shown per line, which is a case a OneBookPlus account handles and this generator does not.

How we calculate this

This generator applies a flat 10% GST to the GST-exclusive line items you enter, totals the subtotal, the GST and the amount due, and lays the document out around the seven elements the ATO requires on a valid tax invoice. It applies no ATO rate table beyond the GST rate, which has been 10% since 1 July 2000, and it makes no judgement about whether a particular sale is taxable, GST-free or input-taxed. Everything runs in your browser: nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers, so the PDF you download is the only copy.
