Key takeaways
5- Private tutoring is one of the fastest-growing AU education sub-categories, driven by HSC/VCE/ATAR pressure and post-COVID learning gaps. Most tutors are sole traders charging $50 to $120/hour depending on subject and level.
- GST treatment: private tutoring is GST-taxable at 10% once turnover exceeds $75,000/year. Tutors below that threshold typically don't register; those at full-time student loads usually do.
Show 3 moreShow less
- Typical billing rhythm: 5-session or 10-session packs sold up front, with the pack billed once and credits drawn down per session. Some tutors also offer pay-per-session for casual top-ups during exam blocks.
- Common AU tutoring tools: Calendly (USD, no GST invoicing), Square Appointments, paper-and-spreadsheet. Few include AU GST-aware accounting, parent comms, and progress notes in one tool.
- OneBookPlus is the all-in-one alternative: session bookings + pack billing + parent reminders + progress notes + GST invoicing + AU school-term aware dashboard, Free, $29/mo (Starter) or $69/mo (Growth), all billed in AUD with no FX risk.
Built for Private Tutors
Every Session, Every Student, In One Book
From recurring weekly slot booking to pack billing, OneBookPlus handles the admin so you can focus on the actual tutoring.
Weekly Session Bookings
Set recurring 1-hour sessions per student, subject-coloured on your calendar. Parents see real-time availability and book online, no more juggling group chats. The Free plan runs one repeating student at a time; Starter at $29/mo runs the full book. One-off sessions are never capped.
Session-Pack Invoicing
Invoice a 5-pack or 10-pack tutoring bundle up front with GST and your ABN, then mark sessions as taught against the pack. The Prepaid Packs app adds automatic per-session credit deduction and low-balance top-up reminders.
Parent + Student Reminders
Automated email reminders the day before each session and an hour out, sent to both the parent and the student. Cuts last-minute cancellations during exam blocks.
Student Profile + Progress Notes
Track topics covered, homework set, and exam-result history per student. Each note is tagged by kind (session observation, exam result, goal, milestone, parent comm), pinned to the session it came from, and flagged 'visible to parent' when you're ready to share. Filter by kind, export the lot as CSV, handy when an HSC parent asks for the term's trajectory in writing.
AU School-Term Aware
The dashboard shows your current term week and the next school-holiday block. Plan the term, batch your invoices, and don't accidentally book a session during the break.
Online + In-Person Modes
Tag sessions as Zoom, in-home, or library. The session-confirmation email pulls the right meeting link or address for each session type automatically.

The app
The app behind your session packs
Prepaid Packs sits on top of your core OneBookPlus plan and counts prepaid session credits down as you teach.
Prepaid Packs
$9/moSell work paid for upfront, and let the balance draw down as each class, lesson or job is done
Studios, tutors, driving schools and trades all sell the same thing: work paid for in advance. Prepaid Packs is the accounting layer between that payment and the work. Define your pack templates (a 5-pack, a 10-pack, a 10-lesson term-pack at your studio rate, three cleans at a package rate), sell one to a customer when they pay, and every completed booking or job deducts a credit automatically. Customers with a booking portal see their own balance, so no awkward "how many sessions do I have left?" texts from parents. When someone drops below 2 credits a low-balance reminder fires inviting them to top up, and the renewal invoice is one tap to send. Expiry rules (a 10-pack expires in 6 months, a term-pack at term-end) stop dormant credits piling up. Multiple pack types run in parallel, so a member can hold a Reformer 10-pack and a Mat 20-pack and the right credit deducts for the class they book. For music studios the same primitive runs term-pack billing. For a jobs-led business - a cleaner selling three cleans upfront, a trade selling a service block - the credit comes off when the JOB is marked complete, and goes back if the job is reopened.
- Pack templates of any size, from 3 to 20+ sessions
- Per-customer balance tracking
- Auto-deduct when a booking or a job is completed
- Credit returned automatically if the work is reversed
- Low-balance alerts at 2 credits left
- Configurable expiry (3, 6, 12 months)

How Tutoring Bookings Work
Get off spreadsheets and onto autopilot before next term starts.
Set up your subjects + rates
Add the subjects you tutor: Maths Methods, English Advanced, HSC Chemistry: with your hourly rate. Toggle online vs in-person for each.
Onboard your students
Import existing students or send each family a sign-up link. Lock in their weekly slot: Tuesday 5pm, for example: and OneBookPlus repeats it through the term. Free covers one repeating student, Starter covers the full book.
Send pack invoices, get paid
Generate a 10-session pack invoice for each student. Parents pay by Stripe. Pack credits draw down automatically as you teach.
Tutor, log, review
After each session, log topics covered and homework set. Reminders fire automatically. At term's end, review revenue, attendance and your no-show rate.
Add your first student and fire a pack invoice the day you sign up

Example walkthrough
Wednesday after school, three students and a term invoice
An illustrative walkthrough of a typical tutoring day
It is Week 6 of Term 3 and trials are three weeks away. You open OneBookPlus and see the day: six sessions today, next month's session packs already invoiced, two invoices still outstanding. The dashboard banner shows the term week and how long until school holidays.
At 5pm a parent messages asking to add a weekend session before trials. You find the student, see three credits left on their 10-pack, and book an hour from your open availability. The parent confirms by reply and the confirmation email goes out automatically.
After each session you log the topics covered, the exam-paper questions worked through, the common-mistake patterns worth revisiting. After the last session of the evening you review two trial essays and the session note captures the feedback.
On Friday evening you batch next term's pack invoices for your regulars, created and sent in a couple of minutes. Several parents pay by card over the weekend. The BAS summary stays up to date on its own.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about tutoring booking and billing software.
Is OneBookPlus tutor software free?
Yes. The Free plan includes session bookings, the student CRM, GST-compliant invoicing, 10 invoices a month and up to 250 contacts. One-off session bookings are unlimited on every plan, including Free. Repeating weekly slots are the one thing with an allowance: Free runs one repeating student at a time, and a second standing slot needs Starter at $29/mo, which makes them unlimited. Extending a repeating slot you already have never costs anything, on any plan, and neither does cancelling, rescheduling or skipping a week on it. A side-hustle tutor with one standing student and casual exam-block sessions can stay on Free; a full weekly book is a Starter tutor.
Can it handle session packs for tutoring?
Yes. Create a 5-session or 10-session pack at your hourly rate and send it as a single GST-compliant invoice at the start of the block, that works today. The optional Prepaid Packs app will then auto-deduct a credit per session and prompt you when the pack drops to 1 session remaining. Today, you mark sessions taught manually and fire the next pack invoice when you're ready.
Does it work for both 1-on-1 and small group tutoring?
1-on-1 is the primary use case. For small group sessions (e.g. siblings or a HSC study group), you can book the same time slot to multiple students and the system will track each student's pack balance separately. Large class-based tutoring centres need a more specialised tool.
Can parents book and reschedule sessions themselves?
Yes. Each family gets a portal where they can request rescheduling within your cancellation window and see their pack balance, past sessions and invoices. You stay in control of which slots are bookable.
Does it handle GST and BAS for tutoring income?
Private tutoring is GST-taxable once your turnover exceeds $75,000/year. Below that, GST registration is optional. OneBookPlus tags every invoice with the correct GST treatment and gives you a quarterly BAS summary so end-of-quarter isn't a spreadsheet weekend.
What if I tutor online via Zoom, does it still work?
Yes. Tag a session as online and attach your Zoom (or Google Meet, or Teams) link to the session-confirmation email template. Each student receives the right link in their reminder, the day before and an hour before the session.
Can I log session notes and share key updates with parents?
Yes. After each tutoring session, write a structured note tagged by kind, Lesson observations, Exams (trial-results, HSC assessment marks), Goals, Milestones, or direct Parent Communications, pinned to the session it came from. Mark a note 'Visible to parent' to share it via the family portal; leave it private for your own pedagogy notes. The student profile lists the full history newest-first with filter chips, and you can export the lot as a CSV for an end-of-term parent meeting. The dashboard's at-risk panel flags regulars who haven't booked recently, useful in HSC year for catching students who quietly drift before exam blocks.
How is student data handled, privacy + Working with Children Check (WWCC)?
Student records (names, parent contact, session notes) are stored in your own business's isolated database. Each business's data is separated at the database layer, so another tutoring business cannot read yours even though you share the same infrastructure. OneBookPlus itself doesn't store the operator's WWCC; verification lives between you and the relevant state authority (e.g. NSW Office of the Children's Guardian, VIC Service Victoria). Australian Privacy Principles (APP) compliance: each tenant's data is yours to export or delete; CSV export of student notes is one click and a soft-delete restores notes within 30 days. AI features can be disabled per-tenant if you'd rather no third-party LLM ever sees student-identifiable text.

Everything said about OneBookPlus describes what the product does today, and the page says so where it does not do something.
Your Complete Tutoring Workflow, From Enrolment to Exam-Block Wrap
Most private tutors got into tutoring because they were good at the subject, did well in HSC or ATAR, and saw a way to earn good money around uni or alongside a full-time job. They didn't start tutoring because they wanted to chase parents for the second-term invoice or maintain a spreadsheet of who's in which 10-pack. OneBookPlus exists so you can spend your time tutoring, and the booking, billing, and admin runs itself.
Enrolment & Recurring Slot Booking
A new student lands on your branded booking page after a Google search, an Instagram referral, or a recommendation from another parent. They see the subjects you tutor, your hourly rate for each, and your real-time availability. They book their first session, Wednesday 5pm Maths Extension 1, for instance, and fill in a short enrolment form capturing the student's school, year level, current grade, target ATAR, parent contact and any access-needs notes. The session lands in your calendar and the parent gets a confirmation email with what to bring and where to meet. Turning that into a standing weekly slot is your call, made from the dashboard, and from there it rolls forward until end of term without being re-entered. Families book and reschedule individual sessions themselves; the repeating slot stays under your control. The Free plan carries one repeating student, so the second standing slot is where a tutor moves to Starter at $29/mo; extending a slot you already have costs nothing on any plan, and one-off sessions are never capped.
Session-Pack Billing & Casual Top-Ups
Most successful tutoring businesses run on packs, typically 5 or 10 sessions sold up front. OneBookPlus generates the pack invoice with your ABN, your bank/Stripe payment options, the session count and the GST line (if you're registered). The parent pays once and the pack credits draw down automatically each time you teach a session. When a student gets to their last one or two credits, the system flags it so you can fire the next pack's invoice, no awkward "hey it's been a while since you paid" messages. For casual one-off sessions (common during exam blocks where students need extra), a single-session invoice goes out as soon as the session completes.
Parent Communication & Rescheduling
Parents drive most of the comms in tutoring, and most of those messages are about rescheduling. OneBookPlus handles this through the family portal. The parent sees your open availability, picks an alternative slot within your cancellation policy window, and the change happens without you needing to text back and forth. Automated reminders go out the day before and an hour before each session, sent to both the parent and the student. The reminder includes whether the session is online, in-home or at a public location, and the right meeting link or address for each.
Progress Notes & Homework Tracking
Each student has a profile that captures their full tutoring history. Before the 5pm Maths session, you tap in and see exactly where you left off, projectile motion last week, started on circular motion midway, set Exercise 8B questions 1 to 14 as homework. After the session, you spend 90 seconds logging what was covered, what's set for next week, and any patterns to flag for the parent. Over a term, the profile shows clear progress that you can share at parent-teacher catch-ups or when families ask whether the tutoring is making a difference. For HSC/ATAR students, the exam-result history shows the trajectory from first session to trials to final exams.
Term Reporting & GST
At the end of each term, OneBookPlus shows you the picture: revenue, sessions taught, attendance rate, no-show count, active student count and your top-revenue subjects. If your turnover is climbing toward the $75k GST threshold, the dashboard surfaces it so you can plan for registration before you cross. If you're already GST-registered, your BAS summary is complete, every invoice has its GST line tagged correctly, expenses are categorised against the right ATO code, and quarterly lodgement becomes a five-minute task instead of a weekend.

Where the industry and tax facts on this page come from
Private tutoring in Australia is governed by ATO/ABN tax rules, ACARA-aligned curriculum standards, and state-specific child-safety requirements (e.g. Working with Children Check). We cite primary sources for every claim on this page so you can verify directly.
- ATO, GST registration , GST registration threshold is $75k turnover; private tutoring is GST-taxable once registered.
- Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) , sets the national curriculum tutors typically align to (F to 10 plus senior pathways).
- NSW Working With Children Check (Office of the Children's Guardian) , NSW WWCC; equivalents apply in every state (e.g. workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au, bluecard.qld.gov.au, screening.sa.gov.au, workingwithchildren.wa.gov.au). Most states require a WWCC for paid tutoring of under-18s.
- Australian Business Register (ABR) , free ABN registration for sole-trader tutors operating their own business.
