Psychologists
Compare local psychologists and book online in seconds.
Psychologists help with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, workplace stress and many other concerns using evidence-based talking therapies. In Australia, psychologist is a protected title: practitioners must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia through AHPRA, and some hold additional endorsement in areas such as clinical psychology. You can check any psychologist's registration on the public AHPRA register.
Finding the right psychologist often takes a little comparison, and OneBookPlus makes that easier by showing local practices, their focus areas and genuine appointment availability side by side. You can book online at any hour, receive confirmation straight away and get discreet reminders, which matters when waiting lists and phone tag add stress.

List your business, freeHow to choose a good Psychologist
- Verify registration on the AHPRA public register and note any area of practice endorsement, such as clinical or educational psychology.
- Look for experience with your specific concern, whether that is anxiety, trauma, ADHD assessment, couples work or child psychology.
- Ask about therapeutic approach, such as CBT, ACT, EMDR or schema therapy, and whether it suits your goals.
- Check session fees and the gap you will pay after any Medicare rebate under a Mental Health Care Plan.
- Consider logistics: telehealth availability, after-hours appointments and realistic waiting times before the first session.
- The relationship matters most; a good psychologist welcomes questions and will refer you on if the fit is wrong.
Questions to ask before you book
- Are you registered with AHPRA, and do you hold an endorsement relevant to my needs?
- What experience do you have treating my particular concern, and which therapy approaches do you use?
- What is your session fee, and what will my out-of-pocket cost be with a Mental Health Care Plan?
- How long is your current wait for a first appointment, and do you offer telehealth?
- How will we set goals and review whether therapy is working?
What does a psychologist cost in Australia?
Private psychology sessions in Australia commonly cost $180 to $300 for around 50 minutes, with clinical psychologists and city practices toward the top of that range. With a GP-prepared Mental Health Care Plan, Medicare rebates part of the fee for up to ten sessions per calendar year, leaving a gap that varies widely between practices. Some psychologists bulk bill concession clients. Psychology services are generally GST-free, and NDIS or private health cover may also help. Always confirm fees before booking.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
You can book privately without any referral. However, to receive Medicare rebates you need a Mental Health Care Plan and referral from your GP, which currently supports up to ten rebated sessions per calendar year. Book a longer GP appointment to set the plan up, then bring the referral details to your psychologist.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Psychologists are AHPRA-registered practitioners who provide assessment and talking therapies; they do not prescribe medication. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialise in mental health, can prescribe medication and usually require a GP referral. Many people see both, with the psychologist providing therapy while the psychiatrist manages medication.
How much does a psychologist cost after the Medicare rebate?
The rebate depends on whether the psychologist holds a clinical endorsement, and fees are set by each practice, so gaps commonly range from about $50 to $180 per session. Some practices bulk bill children, students or concession card holders. Ask for the full fee and expected gap in writing before your first appointment.
Is telehealth psychology as effective as in-person sessions?
For many common concerns such as anxiety and depression, research supports telehealth therapy as broadly comparable to face-to-face care, and Medicare rebates apply to eligible video and phone sessions under a Mental Health Care Plan. Telehealth also widens your choice of psychologist beyond your suburb, which helps in regional areas with long waits.
How do I check a psychologist is properly qualified?
Search their name on the free AHPRA public register, which shows their registration status, any endorsements and any conditions on their practice. All practising psychologists in Australia must appear there. If someone offering therapy is not on the register, they may be a counsellor or coach, titles that are not regulated the same way.
