NSW figures read on Source: NSW Government (Transport for NSW). Registration fee and vehicle tax read from the NSW Government fee schedule on 31 August 2026, current from 1 July 2026. The CTP green slip is a private insurer's premium priced on your vehicle, postcode and driving record, so that component is an indicative mid-range quote rather than a published figure. A one-off $100 rebate on privately registered light vehicles runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027 and is not deducted above.
State note (NSW): Motor vehicle tax in NSW scales by tare weight in bands, from $278 up to 970kg to $596 for 1,501 to 2,500kg. The $84 registration fee is flat. CTP green slip premiums vary by insurer, these figures use a private-use, clean-record indicative quote.
Figures are estimates for privately-owned light vehicles. Real renewal cost depends on tare weight, garaged postcode, driver record, insurer (where applicable), and any concessions. Registration components change on 1 July with each state budget. Always confirm with your state registry before paying. Not financial advice.

What rego costs in New South Wales

New South Wales splits a rego renewal into three parts that behave very differently. The registration fee itself is a flat $84 whatever you drive. The vehicle tax on top of it is set by tare weight, which is why a ute and a hatchback can differ by hundreds of dollars. And the CTP green slip is not a government fee at all: it is a premium a private insurer sets on your vehicle, your postcode and your driving record.

A year's registration, by vehicle class

VehicleRegistrationCTP green slipOther leviesTotal a year
Passenger car$475$470$0$945
SUV$680$510$0$1,190
Ute or light commercial$680$580$0$1,260

That works out at about $79 a month for a passenger car and $105 a month for a ute.

Why the heaviest part of a NSW renewal is the weight band

Transport for NSW charges vehicle tax in tare-weight bands. A passenger car in the 1,151 to 1,500kg band pays $391, while an SUV or a ute in the 1,501 to 2,500kg band pays $596, a difference of $205 before insurance is counted. That is the component people are surprised by, because the flat $84 registration fee is the number most comparison pages quote. Weigh the vehicle, not the body type: a light ute can fall in the lower band and a heavy wagon in the higher one.

Where these figures come from

Registration fee and vehicle tax read from the NSW Government fee schedule on 31 August 2026, current from 1 July 2026. The CTP green slip is a private insurer's premium priced on your vehicle, postcode and driving record, so that component is an indicative mid-range quote rather than a published figure. A one-off $100 rebate on privately registered light vehicles runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027 and is not deducted above.

Registration components change on 1 July with each state budget, so check the total against your renewal notice before you pay. The national rego cost calculator covers all eight states and territories and says, for each one, when its figures were last read.

Running a vehicle for work

If the vehicle earns its keep, registration is one line in a bigger number. The cents per kilometre calculator works out what the ATO lets you claim per work kilometre, and the depreciation calculator handles the vehicle itself.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a ute cost more to register in New South Wales than a hatchback?

Because the vehicle tax component is banded on tare weight rather than body type. The registration fee is a flat $84 for everything. A vehicle in the 1,151 to 1,500kg band pays $391 in vehicle tax and one in the 1,501 to 2,500kg band pays $596, so the gap is $205 before the CTP green slip, which is also usually dearer on a ute.

Is the green slip part of what Transport for NSW charges me?

No. The compulsory third-party green slip is a premium set by a private insurer, priced on the vehicle, your postcode, your age and your driving record, and you buy it separately before you renew. That is why the green slip figure in any calculator, including this one, is an indicative mid-range quote rather than a published fee. Get a real quote from an insurer and the fee schedule from Transport for NSW.

Does the one-off rebate on light vehicle registration come off this estimate?

No, the estimate above does not deduct it. A one-off $100 rebate on privately registered light vehicles in New South Wales runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027. If your renewal falls in that window your actual bill should be about $100 lower than the total shown here. Confirm it against your renewal notice.

How we calculate this

This page adds the base registration fee, any separate vehicle tax, compulsory third-party insurance and any state levies for a privately-owned light vehicle in New South Wales, on the NSW Government (Transport for NSW) schedule. Those figures were read from that authority's own fee pages on 31 August 2026 and are current from 1 July 2026. Registration components change on 1 July with each state budget. The CTP green slip is a private insurer's premium priced on your vehicle, postcode and driving record, so that component is an indicative mid-range quote rather than a published fee. Confirm the exact amount on your renewal notice before paying.
