- Tiling needs a licence in some states for larger jobs; elsewhere it is unlicensed, so insurance and a portfolio matter.
- Look closely at portfolio photos for straight grout lines, neat mitred edges and level large-format tiles.
- Confirm the quote covers surface preparation, since tiling over an uneven or damp substrate fails early.
- Ask about movement joints and trim finishes, which separate careful tilers from fast ones.
- For large-format or stone tiles, check they have specific experience, as both are far less forgiving to lay.

What does a tiler cost in Australia?
Tiling labour typically costs $40 to $120 per square metre, with small mosaic, large-format and natural stone work at the top end. Waterproofing a standard bathroom usually adds $500 to $1,000, and full bathroom floor and wall tiling commonly runs $2,000 to $6,000 in labour. Tile supply is on top and varies enormously. Surface preparation, tile size and layout complexity drive the price, so compare itemised quotes and check GST is included.
Frequently asked questions
Do tilers need a licence in Australia?
In some states, yes, above a job value: NSW and Queensland require a licence for wall and floor tiling on larger residential jobs, while other states have no tiling-specific licence. Waterproofing is more tightly controlled and in several states must be carried out or certified by a licensed waterproofer. Ask what applies to your job and verify any licence online.
Why is waterproofing such a big deal in bathrooms?
Because failures hide until they are expensive. Leaking showers rot wall frames, lift tiles and grow mould, and fixing them usually means stripping the bathroom back to the frame. Australian Standard AS 3740 sets out where membranes must go in wet areas. Insist on the membrane being installed to standard and photographed before tiles cover it.
How long does tiling a bathroom take?
Allow roughly one to two weeks end to end for a standard bathroom: a day or two of preparation, waterproofing with cure time of at least a day or two more, then several days of laying, followed by grouting and silicone. Rushing cure times is a classic cause of failure, so a slightly slower quote is often the better one.
Can you tile over existing tiles?
Sometimes. Tiling over sound, well-bonded existing tiles avoids demolition mess and can work well with the right primer and adhesive. It fails when the original tiles are drummy or the extra thickness creates problems at doors, drains and fixtures. In showers, most tilers prefer stripping back so the waterproofing can be redone properly.
What is a fair deposit and payment schedule for tiling work?
For small jobs, payment on completion is common. For larger jobs, a modest deposit of around ten per cent with progress payments tied to milestones is reasonable, and some states cap deposits on residential building work. Be wary of anyone wanting most of the money upfront, and hold the final payment until you have inspected the finished job.
