Set up the retail till

Products, categories, barcodes and receipts for a shop counter. For a cafe or restaurant, use the restaurant setup guide instead.

This is the setup guide for a shop counter: products, barcodes and receipts. If you run a cafe, a restaurant or anywhere with tables and a menu, use setting up the restaurant POS instead. Both use the same Point of Sale app, and they are set up differently because a counter and a dining room are not the same job.

Point of Sale turns any tablet, laptop or desktop into a working till.

Enabling the POS Module

  1. Go to the App Marketplace in the sidebar
  2. Find Point of Sale and click Install
  3. Point of Sale appears in your sidebar navigation

Adding Products

Before processing sales, add your products:

  1. Go to Products in the sidebar, beside Retail POS
  2. Click Add Product
  3. Fill in:
    • Name: the product name as it appears on receipts
    • SKU: stock keeping unit (optional)
    • Barcode: EAN or UPC barcode number (optional)
    • Price: selling price (GST inclusive or exclusive)
    • Category: group products for easy browsing
    • Track stock: toggle on to manage inventory levels
  4. Click Save

Setting Up Categories

Organise products into categories for quick access during sales:

  • Go to Products in the sidebar and use the category list on that screen
  • Add categories like "Drinks", "Food", "Accessories", etc.
  • Products are displayed by category on the sales screen

Barcode Scanning

OneBookPlus supports two scanning methods:

  • Camera scanning: use your device's built-in camera to scan barcodes
  • Bluetooth scanner: connect a Bluetooth barcode scanner for faster scanning

To enable camera scanning, grant camera permissions when prompted on the POS sales screen.

Quick-Add Items

For items you sell frequently, use the quick-add grid on the sales screen. These appear as large, tappable buttons for fast checkout.

Receipt Settings

The receipt is built from your business details, so there is no separate receipt page to fill in. It prints your business name, address and ABN as an 80mm thermal tape, and you set those under Settings, then Business Profile. Add your ABN there if you have one: without it the docket is a receipt rather than a tax invoice.

One thing the POS does not do yet: it does not take the card payment itself. Card sales are tapped on your existing EFTPOS terminal and recorded in the POS afterwards, so the sale, the stock and the GST are all right even though the tap happened on another machine.

Tip: Start with your top 20 products and organise them into categories. You can always add more later.

Once you are selling, see processing a sale and understanding POS reports.
